What We Offer

Partnering with clients to transform organic waste — from landfills to livestock operations — into scalable, bankable renewable energy infrastructure, Island Renewable Energies provides the experience and capital to develop, design, build, and operate your renewable energy assets from start to finish.

RNG

Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), also known as biomethane, is a renewable fuel produced from biogas (gaseous product of organic matter decomposition) that's upgraded to pipeline-quality and used interchangeably with conventional natural gas.

R-LNG

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is natural gas that's cooled to a liquid state, making it much easier and more economical to store and transport, especially over long distances like across oceans.

R-CO₂

Renewable Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) refers to capturing and utilizing CO₂ from sources that are not fossil fuels, like biomass, industrial waste, or the atmosphere, to create a circular carbon economy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

R-CNG

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is natural gas, primarily methane, compressed to less than 1% of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure, making it a viable fuel for vehicles and other applications.

Industry Experience

Landfill Gas-to-RNG/Power

Landfill gas (LFG) is a natural byproduct of decomposing organic waste in landfills. It consists primarily of methane — a potent greenhouse gas — along with carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and trace compounds. If left uncontrolled, LFG emissions contribute to climate change and can cause odors and other environmental hazards.

To harness its energy potential, LFG is collected through a network of wells and piping systems installed at the landfill. The gas is then transported to a processing facility, where it undergoes a series of treatment steps to remove impurities and increase methane concentration.

  • Water vapor is removed to prevent corrosion and allow efficient gas compression.

  • Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is stripped out to enhance the heating value of the gas.

  • Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is eliminated to reduce odor and prevent equipment damage.

  • Nitrogen and oxygen are also removed to meet pipeline-quality standards.

The resulting high-purity Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) is compressed and injected into natural gas pipelines for commercial and industrial use.

This process transforms a harmful waste emission into a valuable, renewable energy source. LFG-to-RNG projects reduce reliance on fossil fuels, support responsible waste management, and contribute to local economies through job creation and new revenue streams.

Livestock Operations-to-RNG

Large-scale livestock operations, such as dairy and hog farms, produce hundreds of thousands of tons of manure annually — a significant source of smog-forming pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions.

Through anaerobic digestion, this waste is processed in covered lagoons or digesters, where naturally occurring bacteria break down the organic material and produce biogas, a mixture primarily composed of methane and carbon dioxide.

The biogas is captured and sent through an upgrading system, where carbon dioxide and other impurities are removed. The result is a high-purity stream of renewable natural gas (RNG) that can be injected into existing natural gas pipelines for widespread use.

By capturing methane — a greenhouse gas more potent than CO₂ — these projects significantly reduce emissions while turning livestock waste into a valuable energy resource. RNG from livestock not only displaces fossil fuels, but also provides a practical solution to waste management challenges in agriculture.

In addition to the environmental benefits, livestock-to-RNG projects create economic opportunities in rural communities, generating new revenue streams for farmers and energy providers alike.

Source-Separated Organic Waste-to-RNG

Our Source-Separated Organic Waste (SSOW) to Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) process collects food waste from households, grocery stores, and commercial food producers, along with Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG), to serve as high-energy liquid feedstock.

By diverting these organic materials from landfills and incineration, we reduce harmful methane emissions and support municipal and commercial zero-waste goals.

Through anaerobic digestion, naturally occurring microbes break down the organic matter in an oxygen-free environment, producing biogas — a renewable gas typically made up of around 60% methane.

This biogas is then upgraded to RNG by removing carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, moisture, and trace contaminants, resulting in a high-purity, pipeline-quality fuel. The RNG can be injected into existing natural gas infrastructure or used on-site to generate heat, electricity, or vehicle fuel.

In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, this process supports a circular economy, creates renewable energy from waste, and reduces dependence on fossil fuels.

The residual byproduct, known as digestate, can also be repurposed as a nutrient-rich soil amendment, adding further environmental value.

SSOW-to-RNG projects contribute to cleaner communities, create green jobs, and offer scalable solutions for municipalities, food service providers, and industrial clients seeking to meet sustainability targets.
